Oleanders, c. 1888, by Vincent van Gogh sets thick flowering branches in a heavy majolica jug, the blossoms pressed to the picture surface in rhythmic, loaded strokes of pink and green. Van Gogh (1853-1890) painted it at Arles, where he treated the oleander as an emblem of vitality and worked the still life into a vehicle for pure feeling.
