Oarsmen at Chatou, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1879, gathers a group of figures along the banks of the Seine at Chatou, with skiffs drawn up at the shore and the river opening out beneath a bright sky, a sailboat and a distant sculler completing the scene. The brushwork is loose and broken, the palette built on luminous blues, soft greens, and warm flesh tones that catch the dappled light of a summer afternoon. Chatou was a favorite gathering place for Renoir and his circle of friends and sitters, drawn there for the riverside restaurants and the easy pleasures of the boating life.
