Water Lilies (Nymphéas), painted by Claude Monet around 1905 drifts across the surface of his lily pond at Giverny, where clusters of pale blossoms with rose-tinted hearts float on water of lavender blue. Reflections of sky and cloud dissolve into the pond, and only a few blades of grass at the lower corner anchor the composition. By this stage of his career Monet had abandoned horizon and shoreline altogether, letting the water garden he created at Giverny become the sole subject of his art.
