Water Lilies (Nymphéas), painted by Claude Monet between 1914 and 1926, immerses the viewer in a vast expanse of blue-green water where lily pads drift and clouds glow in reflected gold along the right edge. Painted on a monumental scale, the composition abandons horizon and bank entirely, leaving only the shifting surface of the Giverny pond. These late canvases, made as Monet worked toward the great mural cycle now in the Orangerie, push his art to the threshold of pure abstraction.
