Water Lilies (Nymphéas), painted by Claude Monet between 1897 and 1898, shows two pale blossoms floating among broad green lily pads on the still surface of his water garden. Loose, vigorous brushwork dissolves the boundary between water, leaf, and reflection, so the pond reads as a shimmering field of green and violet. The canvas comes from the first sustained group of water lily studies Monet made at Giverny, the motif that would preoccupy him for nearly three decades.
