Evening, After Millet, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1889, reinterprets a composition by Jean-François Millet as a hushed nocturnal interior: a peasant man mends a basket by the stove on the left while a woman tends a cradle by lamplight on the right, the whole scene bathed in deep blues and violets pierced by a single warm lamp. Painted during Van Gogh’s stay at the Saint-Rémy asylum, it belongs to a series of some twenty color “translations” after black-and-white prints of Millet’s work that Van Gogh made in the final year of his life. The painting’s hushed, candlelit intimacy and swirling brushwork turn a modest domestic scene into a deeply personal meditation on rest, labor, and companionship.
