Northeaster, by Winslow Homer captures a wave detonating into a great cloud of foam against the dark rocks of Prout's Neck, Maine, its spray rising against a slate-gray sky. Homer (1836-1910), widely regarded as America's foremost painter of the sea, reworked this canvas at his Maine studio to intensify its depiction of the ocean's raw power.
