The Siesta, after Millet, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1890, reimagines Jean-Francois Millet’s engraving of two peasants resting at midday among the haystacks, an ox-cart waiting in the sunlit field behind them, transformed into brilliant complementary blues and golden yellows. Painted at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Remy during the winter of 1889-90, it was one of several free copies Van Gogh made after Millet’s prints while too unwell to work from life, using the borrowed composition as a vehicle for his own intensely personal colour and touch.
