Painted at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in January 1890, Vincent van Gogh's Noon / The Siesta (After Millet) is a free and brilliantly coloured reinterpretation of Jean-François Millet's celebrated engraving of peasant workers resting at midday, transformed through Van Gogh's expressive colour and swirling brushwork into one of the most tenderly beautiful of all his figure paintings. Like his other copies after Millet, the work is a creative reinvention rather than a reproduction — Van Gogh using Millet's composition as a starting point for his own deeply personal meditation on labour, rest, and the intimate rhythms of rural life. Now held in the Musée d'Orsay, Paris, it is among the most universally beloved of his Saint-Rémy works. A deeply moving and timelessly beautiful work for any interior.
