Still Life with Quinces, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1887-1888, gathers a heap of golden-green quinces tumbled across a blue-gray cloth, the fruit rendered in thick, confident strokes of yellow and green set against a cool, textured backdrop. Painted during his years in Paris, the work reflects Van Gogh’s rapid immersion in Impressionist color theory, as he used the simple, everyday subject of fruit to experiment with vivid contrasts between warm yellows and cool blues. It belongs to a substantial group of Parisian still lifes in which Van Gogh treated humble kitchen subjects as vehicles for chromatic invention, anticipating the intensity of his later Provençal work.
