Mount Vernon, Virginia, c. 1798 by George Isham Parkyns depicts George Washington's Potomac River estate framed by mature trees and open lawns, with riders on horseback approaching the mansion and a sailing ship passing on the river beyond. Parkyns painted the earliest known image of the west front of Mount Vernon and later published this view in his Sketches of Select American Scenery (Philadelphia, 1799). Parkyns (English-American, active 1794–1800) traveled the young United States producing some of the era's most important topographical views of American landscapes and landmarks.
