Mount Kolsaas (Le Mont Kolsaas), painted by Claude Monet in 1895 depicts the snow-covered Norwegian mountain rising above Sandvika beneath a soft winter sky, its slopes rendered in muted violets, greens and pearly grays. Monet painted the motif during his two-month stay in Norway in early 1895, when he visited his stepson Jacques Hoschedé and worked outdoors in the deep snow. The Kolsaas canvases form a series of roughly a dozen views of the same peak, extending the serial method he had developed with his grainstacks and the facades of Rouen Cathedral.
