Morning on the Seine (Matinée sur la Seine), by Claude Monet looks down a quiet stretch of river enclosed by overhanging willows and poplars, their dark foliage framing a pale, mist-softened sky mirrored in still water. The canvas belongs to Monet's Mornings on the Seine series, for which he rose before dawn and painted from a boat moored near his Giverny home across the summers of 1896 and 1897. Working the same view again and again as the light changed, he produced some of his most subtle studies of atmosphere, reflection, and calm.
