Moored Boats, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1887 depicts a quiet stretch of riverbank at Asnières near Paris, where small rowing boats and sailboats rest at anchor along a grassy shore beneath a pale, clouded sky. Van Gogh painted this scene during his two years in Paris, where exposure to Impressionist and Neo-Impressionist painters transformed his palette toward lighter tones and broken, directional brushstrokes applied wet-on-wet to capture the shimmer of light on water. The work belongs to a series of river views he made along the Seine at Asnières, a favorite subject he shared with fellow painters Paul Signac and Émile Bernard during weekend outings from the city.
