Montmartre: Mills and Vegetable Gardens, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1887, captures the semi-rural Butte Montmartre before its full urbanisation, its windmills and market gardens rendered in an elongated, wide-angle composition and a fresh, luminous palette shaped by his growing engagement with Impressionism. A fan of paths and vegetable plots leads the eye toward the distant windmills silhouetted against the Paris sky. The painting is among the most atmospheric and topographically vivid of his Montmartre subjects, now held in the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam.
