The Hill of Montmartre with Stone Quarry (La Colline de Montmartre avec une carrière de pierre), 1886 by Vincent van Gogh
Choose options
The Hill of Montmartre with Stone Quarry, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1886, records the northern slopes of the Butte Montmartre soon after his arrival in Paris, its gypsum quarry workings and distant windmills rendered in the sober, still-Dutch-influenced palette of his earliest months in the city. A lone figure walks the dirt path in the foreground as the green hillside rises toward the ridge of mills above. The Montmartre hillside, still semi-rural and only lightly built up at the time, was among his favourite painting grounds during these formative Paris months.
Artist: Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, 1853-1890). Date: 1886.

A note on this reproduction: this print renders in warmer, more muted tones, with a grayish-cream sky and olive-toned hillside. A cooler, brighter reproduction of this same painting is also available in our collection.
