Montmartre: Behind the Moulin de la Galette, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1887, captures a sweeping view from the Butte Montmartre across allotment gardens, wooden fences, and winding paths toward the pale rooftops and hills of Paris’s northwestern edge. Van Gogh lived a short walk from the Moulin de la Galette windmill with his brother Théo, and this large landscape shows his rapid absorption of Impressionist color and looser, more textured brushwork soon after arriving in the city. The composition sets rustic kitchen gardens in the foreground against a hazy, atmospheric sky and distant suburbs, recording Montmartre’s transitional character as a rural hilltop being absorbed into the growing capital.
