The Studio Boat (Le Bateau-atelier), painted by Claude Monet in 1874 shows the artist's floating studio moored on the calm Seine at Argenteuil, its green cabin and dark hull mirrored in the water below. Monet had the boat fitted out so he could paint the river and its changing light directly from the water, an approach that shaped much of his Impressionist work. Autumnal trees along the far bank and their soft reflections frame the vessel that became a symbol of his open-air method.
