Mist on the Seine at Port-Villez, painted by Claude Monet in 1894 dissolves a range of blue hills and their mirror image into a veil of morning mist rising from the calm river. Monet painted the motif from the banks of the Seine downstream from Giverny, reducing the landscape to soft bands of blue, lavender, and silver reflected in the glassy water. The near-symmetrical composition and muted palette show his growing interest in atmosphere and the serial effects of light in the mid 1890s.
