Grainstacks, Snow Effect (Meules, effet de neige), painted by Claude Monet in 1891 shows two great conical grainstacks standing in a snow-blanketed field near Giverny beneath a pale, overcast winter sky. Their earthy ochre and brown flanks are dusted with snow and glow warmly against the surrounding whites, cool grays, and hints of blue in the distant tree line. The work belongs to Monet’s celebrated Grainstacks series, in which he painted the same humble motif again and again to record the shifting effects of light, weather, and season.
