Melville’s Whales II, by Charles Melville Scammon reproduces a plate from Scammon’s 1874 study, pairing a Humpback whale (Megaptera versabilis) with the Sharp-headed Finner (Balaenoptera davidsoni), rendered in precise, softly stippled grayscale on cream ground. Scammon (1825–1911) was an American whaling captain turned naturalist whose decade of firsthand observation at sea produced The Marine Mammals of the North-western Coast of North America, still regarded as a landmark of 19th-century natural history.
Artist: Charles Melville Scammon (1825–1911). Date: c. 1874.
