Marine, Guernsey (Marine, Guernesey), painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1883, opens onto the open sea off Guernsey, with broken turquoise waves crashing over ochre rocks under a wide, windswept Channel sky. The brushwork is loose and vigorous, built on luminous greens and blues set against warm golden rock forms, an energetic departure from the softer figure painting Renoir is best known for. The canvas is one of roughly fifteen works Renoir painted during a September 1883 stay on the island, and it now hangs in the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.
