The Magpie (La Pie), painted by Claude Monet in 1868-69 depicts a single magpie perched on a wattle gate along a snow covered lane, its dark silhouette the only sharp accent amid a dazzling field of blue tinted shadows and sunlit snow. Monet used subtle variations of white, blue, and violet to capture the brilliance of winter light, a radical departure from the somber gray black snow scenes favored by earlier painters. Rejected by the Paris Salon of 1869, the painting is now considered one of the finest snowscapes in Western art and hangs today in the Musee d'Orsay.

Artist: Claude Monet (French, 1840-1926). Date: 1868-69.
