Lunch at the Restaurant Fournaise, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1875 depicts a relaxed midday gathering on the terrace of the Maison Fournaise, a riverside restaurant and boating establishment on the Seine at Chatou, just outside Paris. Renoir captures two women and a seated man at a linen-draped table, their loose brushwork and dappled light evoking the leisurely boating culture that flourished along the river during the 1870s. The painting belongs to a series Renoir made at the Maison Fournaise, a favorite haunt of his that would culminate a few years later in his celebrated Luncheon of the Boating Party.
