Van Gogh spent months studying the linen weavers of Brabant, drawn to what he called their dignity as a people apart, and often positioned his figures nearly swallowed by the intricate machinery surrounding them. The somber palette of browns and grays, pierced only by a small hanging lamp and a sliver of window light, reflects his deep sympathy for the quiet endurance of rural craft labor.
