Summer (L'Été), painted by Claude Monet in 1874 depicts a woman resting in the shade of a golden wheat field, her parasol beside her, while another figure in white approaches along a grassy path beneath slender wind bent trees. Soft lavender and gold tones capture the hazy warmth of a summer afternoon near Argenteuil, where Monet spent his days painting alongside Renoir and Manet. The models are thought to be Monet's wife Camille and son Jean, rendered with the same loose, atmospheric brushwork he lavished on the surrounding landscape.
