L'Estaque, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1882 captures a sun-dappled path winding through pine and olive trees above the Mediterranean fishing village of L'Estaque, near Marseille, with a small figure in white strolling toward a distant view of rocky coastline and sea. Renoir painted this canvas while visiting his friend Paul Cezanne, who painted the same coastal motifs repeatedly during the 1880s; Renoir's looser, more luminous brushwork offers a distinctly Impressionist counterpoint to Cezanne's structured treatment of the same rocks and light. The painting dates from a pivotal early-1880s period when Renoir was traveling through the south of France and Italy, absorbing new influences on his palette and technique.
