The Bridge, Amsterdam (Le Pont, Amsterdam), painted by Claude Monet in 1874 shows a wooden drawbridge spanning a still Amsterdam canal, its counterweight arm raised against a soft overcast sky while small figures with umbrellas cross toward the far bank. Behind them the slender Montelbaanstoren tower rises through the damp grey air, its reflection shivering in the water below. Painted after Monet’s travels in the Netherlands, the scene trades bright sunlight for the cool, misty atmosphere he found so compelling along the Dutch waterways.
