The Basin at Argenteuil, painted by Claude Monet around 1872, looks along the tree-lined promenade at Argenteuil, where strolling figures pass beneath the plane trees toward a small tollbooth and the road bridge that closes the distance, a lone rowboat resting at the water’s edge beneath a luminous, cloud-filled sky. Painted soon after Monet settled in this riverside town northwest of Paris, the work belongs to a series of more than fifty views he made of the Argenteuil basin between 1872 and 1875, a body of work that helped define the emerging Impressionist style.
