By the Seine, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1887, captures a tree-lined path along the riverbank near Asnieres, a lone figure walking beneath dappled sunlight rendered in quick, broken strokes of blue, green, and sandy ochre. Painted during his Paris years, when frequent walks out to Asnieres and Clichy exposed him to the light and technique of the Impressionists and Neo-Impressionists, it shows his palette shifting decisively away from the dark tones of his Dutch period toward the brighter, more broken colour of his mature style.
