Langlois Bridge at Arles, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1888, captures the wooden drawbridge over the Arles-to-Bouc canal that Van Gogh painted and drew repeatedly during his first months in Provence, drawn to both its picturesque silhouette and its flat, graphic quality reminiscent of Japanese prints. The bridge’s Dutch-engineered design reminded him of the drawbridges of his homeland, and in this version a woman crosses beneath a parasol while a washerwoman kneels at the water’s edge, the structure and its reflection framed by two tall cypress trees. Painted in the spring of 1888, it is among the most beloved and frequently reproduced works of his Arles period.

A note on this reproduction: this print reflects one of Van Gogh's several Langlois Bridge renditions, in a vivid palette with a saturated turquoise sky and water, cypress trees, and figures. A more muted, pastel-toned version without cypresses is also available in our collection.
