Landscape at Wargemont, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1879, depicts the rolling hills, winding road, and lines of trees around the Château de Wargemont in Normandy, home of Renoir's great patron Paul Bérard. Renoir applied thin, translucent layers of paint wet-into-wet, without waiting for each layer to dry, producing the picture's fluid, luminous, and slightly blurred atmosphere, a technique remarkably ahead of its time. The painting was never exhibited in Paris during Renoir's lifetime, first appearing on the market in Copenhagen in 1914, the year after his death.
