Landscape at Saint-Rémy, painted by Vincent van Gogh in October 1889, depicts a walled wheat field near the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum, a solitary peasant carrying a bundle of straw across broken lilac-toned ploughed ground beneath the rising silhouette of the Alpilles mountains. One of four related views of the same enclosed field that Van Gogh painted that autumn, the canvas pairs rough, thistle-strewn earth in the foreground with distant peaks rendered in thick, rhythmic brushstrokes. Now held at Newfields, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, it is a powerful late example of his Saint-Rémy landscape work.
