Landscape at Beaulieu, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir around 1893, captures the lush, sub-tropical vegetation and brilliant blue sea at Beaulieu-sur-Mer on the Côte d'Azur, east of Nice, in the warm golden light of Renoir's mature southern manner. The picture marks a return to the sumptuous, exotic greenery that had first attracted Renoir on his 1881-82 trip to Algeria, rendered here with the same bold, exuberant brushwork he brought to his Mediterranean landscapes of the early 1880s. The Riviera's warmth and color would draw Renoir back again and again over the following decades, eventually becoming his permanent home.
