L’Aiguille and the Porte d’Aval, Étretat (Étretat, l’Aiguille et la Porte d’Aval), painted by Claude Monet around 1885-86, sets the slender chalk needle rock beside the great arched cliff of the Porte d’Aval, its stone catching a cool, silvery light above a shimmering green sea. Monet worked directly on this stretch of the Normandy coast during repeated stays at Étretat, returning to the same dramatic rock formations from different distances and tides.
