Ladies of Arles, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1888, presents two female figures set within a richly patterned garden, the bold decorative colour areas reflecting the Japanese-influenced aesthetic Van Gogh’s Arles period pursued at its most stylistically radical. Painted in November 1888 while working alongside Gauguin, the composition fuses Van Gogh’s memory of his family’s garden at Etten in the Netherlands with the vivid Provençal colour of Arles, producing a dreamlike and intensely decorative scene intended to decorate his bedroom at the Yellow House. Now held in the Hermitage Museum, Saint Petersburg, it remains one of the most strikingly original figure paintings of his career.
