The Siesta, after Millet, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1890, reinterprets Jean-François Millet’s midday-rest imagery through Van Gogh’s swirling brushwork and vivid golden palette, transforming a quiet scene of two peasants resting beside stacked sheaves into one of the tenderest and most emotionally resonant figure paintings of his career. Created at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, the work belongs to a series of free copies after Millet that Van Gogh painted during his convalescence, working from black-and-white reproductions while making the colour and brushwork entirely his own. Now held in the Musée d’Orsay, Paris, it is beloved for its warmth, humanity, and extraordinary painterly quality.
