La Grenouillère, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1869, captures the sun-dappled leisure of the popular Seine bathing resort at Croissy-sur-Bougival, centered on the small round islet Parisians nicknamed “the camembert.” Renoir crowds the floating platform with fashionably dressed visitors in white and dark clothing while bathers wade in the green-blue shallows and a solitary rowboat drifts in the foreground, the whole scene alive with the quick, broken brushstrokes that let sunlight flicker convincingly across moving water. Painted side by side with Claude Monet in the summer of 1869, this canvas is one of the works historians credit with the true birth of Impressionism as a coherent style.
