La Grenouillère, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1869, depicts the crowded round bathing platform nicknamed “the camembert” at the fashionable Seine resort of Croissy-sur-Bougival, where elegantly dressed visitors mingle beneath the trees while bathers wade in the water and a small rowboat rests at the water's edge. Rendered with rapid, broken brushstrokes and high-keyed color straight from the tube, the canvas dissolves solid forms into flickers of reflected light on the moving river. Painted in the summer of 1869 while Renoir worked alongside Claude Monet at the same spot, it stands as one of the pivotal canvases that launched Impressionism.
