La Débâcle, painted by Claude Monet in 1880 captures the dramatic spring thaw of the Seine near Vétheuil, its frozen surface splitting into pale drifting ice floes rendered in the cool, silvery palette and rapid brushwork of Monet's mature Impressionist practice. The work belongs to a series of some twenty ice-break paintings Monet produced into early spring after the brutally cold winter of 1879-80, when the frozen river's eventual breakup produced an extraordinary spectacle of grinding, crashing ice that fascinated him as a fleeting natural motif.
