Keelmen Heaving in Coals by Moonlight, by J. M. W. Turner captures a nighttime scene on the River Tyne, where keelmen labor to load coal aboard a moored sailing vessel beneath a luminous full moon, its glow diffusing through drifting clouds and shimmering across the calm harbor water. Painted by Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775–1851), the celebrated English Romantic painter renowned above all for his mastery of light, the work turns an ordinary industrial task into a study of moonlight, mist, and reflection.
Artist: J. M. W. Turner (1775–1851). Date: 1835.
