Jumbo the Elephant Circus Handbill, c. 1884 depicts the enormous African elephant Jumbo, billed as “The Colossus of His Kind,” striding beside a horse-drawn carriage before a riverside townscape, with his keeper guiding him by the trunk. Purchased from the London Zoo in 1882, Jumbo became the star attraction of the Barnum, Bailey & Hutchinson circus, and handbills like this one advertised him as one of the most famous animals of the 19th century.
