Jean Monet on His Hobby Horse (Jean Monet sur son cheval de bois), c. 1872 by Claude Monet – Fresh Green Edition
Jean Monet on His Hobby Horse, painted by Claude Monet in 1872 shows the artist's five-year-old son Jean at play astride his wooden toy horse in the garden of the family's new home at Argenteuil, his small figure caught mid-motion with the quick, broken brushwork Monet was developing for his Impressionist landscapes. Painted the same summer the Monets resettled in France after fleeing the Franco-Prussian War, the canvas turns a domestic, private moment into as vivid a study of movement and dappled light as his views of the Seine.
Artist: Claude Monet (French, 1840-1926). Date: c. 1872.
