Irises (Les Iris), painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1889, presents a dense bed of blue-violet irises rendered in dynamic, expressive brushwork, with a single white iris breaking the rhythm of the composition and a strip of red-orange earth and yellow-green foliage completing the scene. Painted within his first week at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, the work channels the decorative patterning of Japanese woodblock prints into an intensely personal study of the asylum garden. Now in the J. Paul Getty Museum, it is celebrated as one of the supreme floral masterpieces of the nineteenth century.
