In the Oise Valley, by Paul Cézanne presents a cluster of white-walled, red- and blue-roofed farmhouses gathered behind slender poplars at Saint-Ouen-l’Aumône, their reflections held still in the dark water of a quarry pond in the foreground. Cézanne, a French Post-Impressionist painter (1839-1906) who bridged Impressionism and Cubism, developed this view of the plain near Auvers-sur-Oise and Pontoise around 1880, organizing rooftops and foliage into firm, simplified blocks of color rather than capturing fleeting light.
