Impression, Sunrise, painted by Claude Monet in 1872 depicts the harbor at Le Havre at dawn, its cranes and masts dissolved in mist behind a small rowboat silhouetted against a luminous orange sun. Exhibited in 1874 at the first independent group show organized by Monet and his colleagues, the painting gave a hostile critic the word he used to mock the exhibitors as mere impressionists, a label the painters then claimed for themselves. The canvas is now regarded as one of the founding works of modern painting.
