Impression, Sunrise (Impression, soleil levant), c. 1872 by Claude Monet is one of the most historically significant paintings in Western art, the work that gave the entire Impressionist movement its name. It captures the harbour at Le Havre at dawn, a small rowing boat passing before the blazing orange reflection of the rising sun as the industrial port dissolves into hazy grey. First exhibited in 1874 and now held at the Musée Marmottan Monet in Paris, the work was initially ridiculed by critics before transforming the course of European painting.
Artist: Claude Monet (French, 1840-1926). Date: 1872.
