Ice Floes on the Seine at Bougival, painted by Claude Monet around 1868, captures the Seine choked with drifting ice during the harsh winter of 1867-1868, its cold silvery light and broken surface rendered with the direct, naturalistic touch of his early Impressionist practice. Painted at Bougival, just outside Paris, the work is among his most striking early winter landscapes and reflects the outdoor painting discipline he had begun to cultivate in the preceding years. Its restrained palette of grays and blues marks a deliberate departure from the brighter riverscapes for which Monet would later become known.
