Hudson Bay Trading Post on Flathead Indian Reservation, Montana Territory, by Peter Peterson Tofft, depicts a winter scene at the trading post, with log buildings and a scattering of tepees set against snow-covered peaks as two riders approach along the open ground. Tofft was a Danish-born artist (1825-1901) who sailed to California in 1849, contributed illustrations to Harper's, and made extensive painting excursions through the Pacific Northwest and Montana, leaving behind a rare and historically valuable record of the region's frontier life.
Artist: Peter Peterson Tofft (1825-1901). Date: 1865-67.
