Painted in 1904 during his final extended campaign in London, Claude Monet's Houses of Parliament, Sunset captures the silhouette of the Palace of Westminster dissolving into the atmospheric Thames fog in a blaze of deep orange and violet, rendered with the extraordinary chromatic intensity of his late Impressionist vision. The work belongs to his celebrated London series, exhibited at Durand-Ruel's gallery in Paris in 1904 to immediate critical and popular acclaim, in which the same views of the Thames were painted dozens of times under varying conditions of fog, mist, and light. By 1904 his treatment of the subject had reached a pitch of chromatic saturation and atmospheric dissolution that was entirely new in the history of painting. A deeply immersive and visually extraordinary work for any interior drawn to the heights of French Impressionism.
