Houses at Cagnes, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1905 depicts a cluster of ochre-walled village houses glimpsed through a dense, sun-dappled canopy of trees, their foliage rendered in loose strokes of gold, olive, and lavender-tinged shadow. A lone figure in a pale dress strolls the sunlit path in the foreground, a small human note within the shimmering Provençal light Renoir loved to paint in his final years. Cagnes-sur-Mer, where Renoir settled in 1907, became the subject of an extended late-career series in which his palette grew warmer and his brushwork looser, evoking the region's soft Mediterranean atmosphere rather than sharply drawn architectural detail.
